Gems From Gujarat And Maharashtra That Made India Proud
Gujarat and Maharashtra have produced iconic figures—from Vikram Sarabhai and Vallabhbhai Patel to Bajirao I and Sachin Tendulkar—who shaped India’s history, culture, science, and sports.
GUJARAT
1. Queen Udayamati
Built Rani ki Vav in the 11th century in memory of King Bhima I. Buried for years, the sand preserved its carvings, keeping them sharp even today.
2. Falguni Pathak
Made Gujarati culture global through Navratri songs. Her tomboy childhood style later became her iconic identity.
3. Vallabhbhai Patel
“Iron Man of India” who unified 500+ princely states. Once a top lawyer, he burned his British clothes to join the freedom movement.
4. Ranjitsinhji
Played for England (1896–1902); Ranji Trophy named after him, though he never played in it. Practised batting using candlelight shadows.
5. Vikram Sarabhai
Father of India’s space program; founded ISRO. Early rockets were transported on bicycles and bullock carts.
MAHARASHTRA
1. Bajirao I
Became Peshwa at 20, fought 40+ battles without defeat. His fast cavalry outmatched larger Mughal forces; reached Delhi in 1737.
2. Lata Mangeshkar
Once rejected for a “thin voice,” she went on to record 30,000+ songs and became a global music legend.
3. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar
Imprisoned in Cellular Jail, he wrote and memorised poems on walls despite harsh conditions.
4. Sachin Tendulkar
As a schoolboy, scored a 664-run partnership with Vinod Kambli, hinting at his legendary career.
5. Anil Kakodkar
Played a key role in advancing India’s nuclear program despite global sanctions after 1998.
