Do you know which is the world’s most expensive vegetable? Well, the answer is Hop Shoots, and it is known for its antibacterial properties. Hop Shoots sell for around Rs 1 lakh a kilogram. What’s even more interesting is the fact that this vegetable is being grown by a farmer in Bihar. Amresh Singh, a 38-year-old who hails from the Karamdih village in Aurangabad,Bihar started growing the vegetable on his farmland. He had brought the saplings from the Indian Vegetable Research Institute at Varanasi and planted them. You will not see Hop Shoots at your local vegetable market. You will have to place a special order to buy it.
Singh said that the farming of hop-shoots is done in countries like Britain, Germany, and others. In India, it was done earlier in Himachal Pradesh but stopped as no one bought it because of the high price. He also said that the fruit, flower, and stem of hop-shoots are all used in beverage making, beer making and for medicinal purposes. The medicine, which is made with the stem of this vegetable, has also been found to have a high curative effect in the treatment of Tuberculosis (TB). Also, its acids are known to help kill cancer cells and block leukaemia cells. Gradually, its use as a vegetable and herbal medicine grew in a number of countries.
