On 26 October 1966 at the UNESCO’s 14th general conference, 8th September was declared as International Literacy Day. The aim of the International Literacy Day is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Many countries celebrate literacy day. Every year International Literacy Day has a specific theme which focuses on education. The theme for 2007 “Literacy and Health”.
The theme of the 2011–2012 celebrations was “Literacy and Peace”. International Literacy Day 2020 focuses on “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.” The focus is especially on the role of educators and changing teaching methods.
Literacy in India is important for socio-economic progress. Government has various programs but India’s literacy rate increased only a little. Literacy rate in India is uneven and different states and union territories of India have differences in their literacy rates.
