Part 8 | Haunted Places in India | Howrah Bridge & Tripura State Assembly

In the 8th Part of the haunted series we bring to you the spooky story from Kolkata and Tripura

As you must know by now, India is home to a number of haunted places, and each and every state has a ghost story of its own to tell. Many of our viewers commented saying they want to know about haunted places in their home states of Kolkata and Tripura.

Kolkata: Established in 1943, the Howrah Bridge is not just an architectural beauty but also a famous haunted spot of Kolkata. Over the years, there have been numerous cases of people committing suicide by jumping off the bridge. The wrestlers who practice by the ghats of the Hooghly river at around 3 am, often claim to see hands asking for help, right above the water surface. It is said that those who have tried to help the drowning individual, have in the process ended up drowning as well. Whether the hands are those of spirits or real people, nobody knows. Some also claim to have witnessed a lady dressed in white, sobbing and calling out their names in a nasal tone. So if you find yourself by the Hooghly river and hear someone call out to you, think twice before looking back!

Tripura: Tripura state assembly employees conducted an all day long puja in the building to shoo away evil spirits. Apparently, the puja was being offered to Lord Vishnu.  300 employees attended the “secretly” organized function. The puja was the result of some people claiming that ever since the state assembly shifted to its new building in 2012, eight deaths have occurred. Some think this is a bad omen. Another story is that the new secretariat stands on top of a burial ground where more than 250 people who were killed in the 1980 Mandai massacre were buried, and of course, the employees did not want to work among ghosts!  Some employees have even complained that because of the persistent sounds of “ghosts” screaming, they cannot work at night. So anyhow, to ward off all that evil energy and all those restless ghosts, Tripura’s state assembly conducted the puja.
