Ranking of the safest countries in the world is called The Global Peace Index. Institute for Economics and Peace publishes this report every year. It is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization. It aims to shift the world’s focus to peace. The report researches countries and the most dangerous. 163 countries are included in the report. There are 23 different indicators (points) used to determine (decide) how safe or how dangerous a country is. 

These 23 factors are broken into different categories such as: 

1. Ongoing International and Domestic Conflict

2. Societal Safety and Security

3. Militarization

4. Political instability 

5. Terrorist acts

6. Number of homicides and many other points. 

Depending on these points, each score is calculated for each country.  The lower the score, the higher the nation is ranked in terms of safety. Let me tell you about the top 10 safest countries in the world and some interesting facts about them. 

1. Iceland: Iceland is the safest country in the world for the 12th year in a row(continuously). Iceland does not have a military and the police do not carry firearms with them. They only extendable batons and pepper spray.

2.New Zealand: New Zealand has a very low crime rate. But theft is a common occurrence especially for tourists. New Zealand has no deadly animals.

3. Portugal: In 2014 Portugal was ranked 18th but it has made several changes to the country and is the 3rd safest country in the world. Portugal is also known as the best country for retirement in 2020. 

4. Austria: Serious crimes are very rare in Austra they have had no major acts of terrorism.

5. Denmark: Denmark is one of the few countries where people, even children feel safe at any time of day or night. 

6. Canada: Canada is maintaining its position from 2018. Canada has some of the most friendly people in the world.

7. Singapore: Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, which is due to severe penalties that are issued for even small crimes.

8. Slovenia: Slovenia improved by three positions. It ranked 11th in 2018.

9. Japan: Japan has been in the top ten countries for 12 years. 

10. Czech Republic: The Czech Republic fell three spots from its 2018 ranking from seven to ten. It fell in rankings due to its high involvement in foreign conflicts.
