Why should you not eat fruits at night?

Eating fruits is healthy but not ideal at night due to digestion and sleep issues. Ayurveda also recommends enjoying fruits in the morning for best results.

Fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, making them an important part of a healthy diet. But eating fruits at night, especially before sleeping, may not be the best idea for everyone.

Fruits contain natural sugars like fructose, which give energy something the body doesn’t need before bedtime. This can make it harder to relax and fall asleep. Digestion also slows down at night, so high-fiber fruits like apples or pears may cause bloating or discomfort. Eating fruits late can also affect weight management, as the body may store unused calories as fat. Watery fruits like watermelon or oranges might interrupt sleep by making you wake up often to use the washroom.

According to Ayurveda, it’s also best to avoid fruits at night. The digestive fire, or Agni, is weaker during nighttime, so fruits may not digest properly and can create Ama (toxins). Fruits are also cooling in nature, which can disturb the body’s temperature balance. Ayurveda recommends eating fruits alone and on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning.

Morning to midday is considered the best time to eat fruits, as the body absorbs nutrients better. It’s ideal to eat fruits 2–3 hours before dinner and not mix them with dairy products like milk or yogurt.

In short, both Ayurveda and modern science agree fruits are healthiest during the day. If you crave something sweet at night, keep it light and simple.
