A lot of people working in Dubai are from Kerala, India. Many Deaf from India are living in Dubai for work.

However as compared to Mumbai and other parts fo the coutry, a large percentage of people from Kerala work in Dubai. Lots of Deaf and Hearing Indians are living and working in Dubai. India has many festivals like Diwali, Eid, Onam, etc. But today I will talk about Onam. These are the 2 signs for Onam. You may have seen in people beautifully celebrating the Onam festival. But the Deaf who are staying in Dubai, dearly miss out on the Onam festivities like the different games, boating, etc. Deaf employees in Dubai requested their employers for leave as they wanted to visit India for Onam celebrations. However, the employers denied stating that they can go next year. The hearing people in Dubai celebrate a lot of festivals. What about the Deaf? Due to the communication barrier, they follow a routine life of home and work. Surprisingly on 17th September 2023, the Deaf living in Dubai organized an Onam event which was attended by a lot of Deaf. Wonderful! Have a look at the pictures and videos. Did you see? What an amazing Onam event by the Deaf in Dubai! Let me tell how they organized. Earlier Deaf woman, Sunitha Narayanan - sign name - saw the Deaf celebrating Ramadan. Amazed, she decided to celebrate Onam. She then started gathering a team which included herself, her husband Sreekumar Menon - sign name - Anish Kumar, Willam Sunny, Jyothish S R. and Mae Flor - sign name - who is from Phillippines.

Along with the organizing, they are the ones who even sponsored the program. Sreekumar Menon made calls, booked the venue, catering etc. They then announced the event. Even though only about 30 Deaf showed interest in participating for the event, it was fine. However, on the day of the event, 50 people came.

and the crowd is increasing. 70 people attended the festivities! Whoa! That's a huge number. The video that I showed was from the event. This was first time in Dubai. That means that there a lot of Keralites, Sri Lankans, Filipinos, Pakistanis etc. The Deaf from Kerala, Mumbai and other places, now working in Dubai enjoyed the festivities and the Onam Sadhya. They were glad that they could celebrate the same festival in Dubai. It is all thanks to the 6 organizers - Sunitha Narayanan, her husband and the team. Everyone was elated and it is all thanks to the team. For the Onam event, along with the Deaf from Kerala, many from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Jordan etc attended. They were curious about the Onam festival and the environment beamed with positivity. Thanks to Sunitha, Anish, Willam, Jyothish and Mae for their efforts. The team is now planning to host a program in December to celebrate Christmas. They plan to celebrate different festivals throughout the year. They want to celebrate the festivals together. What a lovely thought! If you wish to see the entire video of the Onam celebration on Dubai, you can watch it on their Youtube channel - Quiet Tuber. Hope you enjoy it.
