Pappammal was born in 1914 in Devalapuram village in Tamil Nadu. Pappammal is a105 years old and way of living is an eye opener. The younger generation these days is often complaining about working hard and continuously cribs about wanting a break. But this 105 year old lady is very different. Let me tell you about her. Pappammal said, “There were no formal schools when I was growing up. Whatever little I learnt was all through games and learnt counting and mathematics. Agriculture was something that always interested me. I would save money from the earnings at the provision shop and eventually had enough to buy 10 acres of land to cultivate.” Pappammal started with cultivating corn, various kinds of pulses, and also a few fruits and vegetables that she used for the family.
Later she also joined the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) to learn formally. When asked which year she enrolled at the college, she says it was a very long time ago, and she cannot recollect the details of the year. She has spent close to six decades farming. She currently holds 2.5 acres of land. Today’s generation thinks about retiring by the age of 50, but Pappammal till this day works on her land everyday. She is a strong supporter of organic farming. She says the younger generation only wants quick results and does not really have the time to invest in organic farming. Akshita, Pappammal’s great-grandson’s daughter, says, “There is so much to learn from grandma, but the one thing I have learnt is to not waste time by sleeping. There is so much to achieve in life.” Dr Pavitra, who has a clinic in Pappammal’s village, says, “Grandma comes to my clinic regularly, and till date, her blood pressure and sugar are 100 percent normal.” At 105 she is sharp, clear, and in complete control. Grandma is not just an inspiration but a living legend. Pappammal says, “Age cannot be the barrier for anything and always remember that there can never be a substitute for hard work.” This advice comes from a 105-year-old, so it's an advice that we cannot ignore.
