13 Infected With Norovirus in Kerala

As many as 13 cases of the norovirus have been reported in students of a veterinary college in Pookode in Wayanad district, Kerala. State Health Minister Veena George has asked people to be vigilant and issued guidelines to check the outbreak.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the norovirus is a highly-contagious virus. It is similar to diarrhea and causes vomiting. Anyone can get infected and sick with it. 

You can contract this virus : 

1) Having direct contact with an infected person 

2) Consuming contaminated food or water 

3) Touching contaminated surfaces and then putting your unwashed hands in your mouth for eating or other activities.

The most common symptoms of the norovirus are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain, fever, headache, and body aches. Symptoms start showing 12 to 48 hours after exposure and usually last between 1-3 days. 

There is no specific medicine or cure for the norovirus yet. Experts recommend drinking plenty of water and other liquids. You can also take medicines prescribed by your doctor to manage fever/body pains. Experts suggest maintaining proper hand hygiene to prevent catching the norovirus. Besides soap and water, you can also use alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Clean and disinfect surfaces in your house thoroughly.
