A 14-year-old girl student is suspected of having set the devastating fire at the Mahdia Secondary School in Guyana, South America. 19 children died in the unfortunate incident as they couldn't escape as the dorm's doors were locked.
As per reports, the girl allegedly committed the crime as her cell phone was confiscated by school authorities to discipline her for having an affair with an older man. Miffed at the school authorities for seizing her phone, the girl threatened that she would burn down the building and everybody heard her. Minutes later the girl went to the bathroom area and sprayed insecticide on a curtain before lighting a match. Despite efforts by other students to extinguish the fire, it quickly swept through the wooden ceiling and eventually gutted the entire building.
Many female students were asleep and were awakened by screams. Upon checking, they saw fire/smoke in the bathroom area, which quickly spread in the building, causing several students to receive burns to their bodies and smoke inhalation, while several managed to escape. “The house mother (Warden of hostel) was asleep at the time inside the building but panicked and could not find the right keys to unlock the building from inside but she made it out.”
The firefighters were able to rescue about 20 students after breaking through walls of the school. While 18 of them were students, the 19th death was of the dorm mother’s own 5-year-old son. 13 victims were burned beyond recognition. Guyana has accepted help from the US and other countries that volunteered to send forensic experts to assist with DNA identification. The officials said that the teenage pupil had admitted to the arson attack and was under police guard at the district hospital as she too was injured.
In addition to charging the teen culprit and putting her in a juvenile home , police are expected to arrest the man she was in a relationship with for statutory rape as the girl was under 16 years (minor). Authorities also said contacting the families of those killed or injured could be difficult because the school catered to children from communities in the region that are sometimes difficult to access.
