5 Army Officers Die in Jammu Kashmir

Four military personnel and one Jammu Kashmir police officer were martyred in a terrorist encounter.

The Indian Army received a tip off that terrorists were keeping civilians hostage in a house at the Chanjmulla area of Handwara, Jammu Kashmir. A joint operation was then launched by the India Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police to rescue civilians and catch the terrorists. On Saturday 2nd May, at 3:30 pm, the internet in the area was disconnected and a team of five Army and 5 J&K police personnel entered the area which was deep inside the jungle. 

The terrorists then fired at the army and the police. The firing continued for 18-hours.In the firing Four Indian Army officers and 1 police sub-inspector died. Two senior officers, Colonel Ashutosh Sharma and Major Anuj Sood, were among those killed in the encounter however they managed to kill 2 terrorists. The team was successful and saved the civilians. In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Tributes to our courageous soldiers and security personnel martyred in Handwara. Their valour and sacrifice will never be forgotten. They served the nation with utmost dedication and worked tirelessly to protect our citizens. Condolences to their families and friends”
