6 Dead in Mumbai Footbridge Tragedy

The “Himalaya Bridge” near CSMT, locally known as “Kasab Bridge” since it was used by terrorists in 26/11 to cross over to the railway station. The bridge connects the railway station with the B.T.Lane near the Times of India building. At 7:35 pm on 14 March the bridge collapsed during rush hour. 6 people were killed and 35 people have been injured. Two of the victims, were nurses at the nearby GT Hospital.Police officers and rescue workers rushed to the site and took the injured were taken to the GT and St. George Hospitals nearby.
The police is said that the other half of the bridge is being demolished to prevent any more accidents. The BMC-Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, is responsible for the maintenance of the bridge. An FIR has been registered at the Azad Maidan Police Station, for death due to negligence. The police has said that the names of the persons responsible will be added after further investigation.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted that he is extremely pained to hear about the accident. He said that, he has given special instructions to the BMC Commissioner and Police officials to make sure the injured are treated quickly. The CM also announced that the families of the victims who died, would receive Rs 5 lakh each and the injured would receive Rs 50,000 each. He also said that the State Government would pay for all the medical expenses of the injured.
The CM said that in 2018 officials had conducted a structural audit and recommended some repairs. He has promised to carry out a high level inquiry and take serious action against those responsible for the accident.
