An Army jawan alleged that his wife was “stripped half-naked and brutally beaten” by a group of people in Thiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu. A video surfaced on Twitter, featuring Army jawan Havildar Prabhakaran. Prabhakaran hails from Tamil Nadu and is currently posted in Kashmir. The jawan’s video went viral on social media after a retired army officer Colonel N Thiagarajan shared it on Twitter. In the video, Havildar Prabhakaran said, “My wife runs a shop in a place on lease (rent). She was beaten up by 120 men and the shop’s items were thrown out. I have sent a petition to the Superintendent of Police (SP) and he has assured action. Please help. They have attacked and threatened my family with knives. My wife was stripped half-naked and brutally beaten.” The jawan's wife said, "More than 40 people attacked me. They verbally abused me, using obscene language. They also touched me inappropriately. They are not letting our family live in peace. They are threatening me.” However, the Tamil Nadu police refuted the claim. Police stated that a shop was built on land belonging to Renugambal temple. The shop was leased to Selvamurthy, Prabhakaran’s father-in-law, for Rs 9.5 lakh for a period of five years by a person named Kumar.
After Kumar died, his son Ramu wanted the shop back, so he agreed to return the money and an agreement was signed on 10th February 2023. However, Ramu claimed that Selvamurthy did not agree to take money and refused to leave the shop.On 10th June 2023, Ramu had gone to the shop to give the money to Selvamurthy’s sons Jeeva and Udhaya, who reportedly attacked Ramu. Jeeva had reportedly slashed Ramu’s head with a knife. Police claim that after watching the scuffle, onlookers came in support of Ramu, leading to a major fight where items in the shop were thrown out. The police claimed that Prabhakaran's wife Keerthi and her mother were in the shop. Initial investigations show no one attacked Keerthy or insulted her or her mother. Later in the evening, Prabhakaran’s wife got herself admitted to the hospital. Though the jawan says his wife has suffered grievous injuries, as per police officials, that’s not true. Police have registered a case against both parties based on complaints from both.
Police have initiated a detailed investigation but stated that Havildar Prabhakaran’s claims were exaggerated. The Indian Army too gave a statement that they have got in touch with the police which assured proper investigation into the alleged molestation of a jawan's wife. The army said that the well-being of families of soldiers who stay away from their homes and deployed in field areas. However, based on the FIR registered on a complaint lodged by the jawan, two of the accused -- Ramu and Hariprasad -- have already been arrested. The police also said that the soldier’s family has been given police protection.
