Australia: Worst Floods in 60 Years
Australia's south east was lashed by another round of intense rainfall Monday, as thousands of people were ordered to evacuate.
Last year Australia and its wildlife suffered a lot due to the dangerous bushfires. Now for the first time in 60 years, there is heavy rainfall and floods in east Australia’s New South Wales. It is Australia’s most populated state. These rains have been going on since 21st march. Weather officials say It is possible that the rains will continue for another 1 or two days. More than 18,000 people have been evacuated. The neighbouring state of Queensland has also been warned of severe floods as well. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the situation is extremely dangerous. Some parts of New South Wales’s capital Sydney's western regions have suffered the worst flooding since 1961. Images showed roads submerged in water, animals stuck in floods and cars up to their windshields in water. Livestock in farms have been trapped as rivers burst their banks or fields saturated with rainwater turned to mud. One farmer’s 85 cows died because of floods.
The State Emergency Service (SES) personnel have been helping rescue people from the floods operation during severe flooding in Sydney. Dogs in carriers were seen being transported on inflatable boats by SES personnel during Warragamba Dam, which provides the bulk of Sydney's drinking water, spilled over. Health officials have said the rain and floods will delay the already halting roll-out of coronavirus vaccines in Sydney and surrounding areas. Australia was supposed to start its vaccination drive today on 23rd March but because of the floods there will be a delay. There were many images going viral on social media in which thousands of spiders were seen in people’s houses and in residential areas. This is because insects were escaping the floods.
