Bangladesh Protest: Air India’s Special Flight Brings Back Indians

Check out the latest updates on the ongoing violent protests in Bangladesh and learn how Bangladesh’s new government can negatively affect India.

On 5th August 2024, violent protests in Bangladesh escalated as a mob attacked and set fire to the house of Hindu musician Rahul Ananda. Former national cricket captain Mashrafe Mortaza's home also faced a similar fate. The violence has led to the deaths of 29 Awami League leaders and their families. In response, Air India and other airlines canceled flights to and from Dhaka, and a special chartered flight was arranged to bring 205 stranded Indians back to India.

The attacks have continued, with Hindu temples being vandalized and a deadly prison break occurring on 7th August. Additionally, groups of Bangladeshi citizens attempted to cross into India, raising concerns over border security.

Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's Prime Minister, has sought asylum, but her options are limited. The U.S. revoked her visa, and her situation remains uncertain.

India is now facing a complex foreign policy challenge. With the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, there are concerns about the future of India-Bangladesh relations. Agreements on trade, border security, and anti-terrorism efforts could be at risk, potentially shifting Bangladesh's alliances towards China.
