Bareilly Bride Cancels Wedding After Groom Demands Rs 20 Lakh & Brezza Car

A wedding in Bareilly collapsed after the bride accused the groom of demanding dowry, while the groom claimed he was rejected because of his weight.

A wedding in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, turned into complete chaos on 12th December 2025. The marriage of Jyoti Murlidhar had been fixed with Rishabh, a 29-year-old fashion designer, eight months earlier through a matchmaker named Indrapal. At first, everything seemed respectful. The groom’s father had said that they did not want any dowry and that Jyoti could come with only one pair of clothes.

But this promise did not last. The engagement took place in May 2025, where the bride’s family spent around ?3 lakh and gave the groom a gold ring, gold chain, and ?5 lakh in cash. After that, demands kept increasing. One day before the wedding, the bride’s family delivered items like an AC, refrigerator, washing machine, jewellery, household goods and ?1.2 lakh in cash. The expensive venue was also booked on the groom’s family’s request.

On the wedding day, Rishabh arrived late with the baarat. Just before the pheras, he allegedly demanded a Brezza car and ?20 lakh in cash, threatening to cancel the wedding. When the bride’s family said arranging a car was impossible, he allegedly told them to give the full cash amount instead. As arguments grew louder, the bride’s family called the police. Jyoti refused to marry, saying she would not marry “dowry-hungry people”.

A video of Jyoti speaking went viral and Bareilly Police took the groom, his father and his brother-in-law into custody for questioning.

However, the groom claimed the real reason was body-shaming. He said the bride refused to marry him because of his weight and that the dowry allegations were made to recover money. He also accused the bride’s family of demanding ?50 lakh and holding his family hostage. A senior police officer added that the groom fell asleep during the baarat, raising suspicion of drunkenness. Police said the matter is still under investigation.
