Bengaluru: Man Dies by Suicide, Blames Wife for Harassment

In a disturbing incident, a 34-year-old techie from Bengaluru, Atul Subhash, died by suicide alleging harassment from his wife Nikita Singhania.

In a disturbing incident, a 34-year-old tech enthusiast named Atul Subhash died by suicide on Monday, 9th December 2024.

Atul hailed from Uttar Pradesh but lived in Manjunath Layout in Bengaluru for work. He was a senior executive for a private company in Bengaluru.

He used to live alone as he had separated from his wife, Nikita Singhania. They have a 4-year-old son.

According to the reports, the Bengaluru Police Control Room received a call about the incident early morning on Monday. When they reached the flat, they found it to be locked from inside.

When they broke in & entered the house, they found Atul hanging from the ceiling with a nylon rope. The Bengaluru Police also found a 24-page suicide note there.

The suicide note had 4 handwritten pages and 20 typed & printed pages.

In his suicide note, Atul explained his history with his wife, the false court cases and its impact on his family and mental health in detail.

Atul blamed his wife and her mother Nisha, brother Anurag & uncle Suhsil for the harassment he suffered, because of continuous marital problems.

According to an India Today report, Atul was involved in a legal dispute with his wife after his wife filed 9-10 cases including murder, sexual misconduct, harassment for money, domestic violence, and dowry demands against him in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The recent court verdict in the case was against Atul, which greatly distressed him.

In the long suicide note Atul mentioned that he gave his wife ?40,000 every month as maintenance for their son and that she works at Accenture and earns her own money yet despite all this she demanded ?2-4 lakhs more and ?30 lakh for visitation rights to his son from Atul.

Atul also wrote about how his son was being kept away from him. He also included a heartfelt message for his son and urged that his parents be granted his son’s custody.

The Bengaluru Police also learnt that Atul had also emailed the suicide note to several people including his younger brother - Bikas and shared it in the WhatsApp group of an NGO he was involved with at around 1 am.

Before hanging himself, Atul went live on social media for 90 minutes. In the live video, Atul explained all the important details in his suicide note, vehicle keys, and a list of completed and pending tasks for his “last day” on a cupboard before taking his life.

He said that it took him a few months to make sure that he completed his pending responsibilities towards his family and to finish all his work commitments.

Atul highlighted that the money he earns is helping his enemies grow stronger. He said, “The tax I pay on my salary is helping the police and the legal system harass me and my family. My in-laws suggested I commit suicide, so I am complying,” in the video.

He also repeatedly wrote “Justice is due” in the video. He even hung a placard in his house that read, “Justice is due” & urged his family not to immerse his ashes until justice is served in the video.

He posted the live video with the caption, “I will be dead when you will read this. A legal genocide of men happening in India currently."

He also tagged Elon Musk and US President-elect Donald Trump in the video saying that a dead man is requesting them to save millions of men and to restore their freedom of speech in India.

Atul’s video has now gone viral on the internet.

Bikas has filed an FIR against Atul’s wife & her relatives in Bengaluru. The Bengaluru Police have initiated a detailed investigation into the matter.

Atul’s father, Pawan Kumar claimed that he was stressed & frustrated because of repeated legal disputes with his wife. Atul’s wife used to frame one charge after another against him.

Pawan said that Atul told him that the mediation court did not work as per law, not even as per the rules of the Supreme Court and that he had to go to Jaunpur from Bengaluru 40 times to face cases filed by his wife and her family. Atul’s wife demanded ?3 crores to settle the cases.

Bikas said, “He should get justice at any cost. The laws are made for women, and a lot of women take advantage of them, especially in divorce cases.”

Atul’s suicide has brought the dark side of the family laws & court system in India to light. Do you think family laws in India are partial towards women and need to be changed? Share your thoughts in the comments.
