Child Dies After Electric Vehicles Battery Explodes

A seven-year-old boy died ten days after an electric scooter battery exploded while charging at his home in Maharashtra’s Palghar district.

India has been witnessing electric scooter battery fires since the beginning of 2022. A few months ago, an electric vehicle fire occurred in Andhra Pradesh, where the battery of an electric two-wheeler exploded in a house, killing one person and injuring three others. The event occurred in Vijayawada, when the detachable battery of the vehicle was kept on charging in his bedroom and it suddenly exploded in the early hours when all were asleep.

Recently, a seven-year-old boy succumbed to injuries ten days after an electric scooter battery exploded while charging at his home in the Vasai area of Maharashtra’s Palghar district. The small boy who lost his life in the incident was identified as Shabbir Shah Nawaz. The incident occurred in the early morning hours at around 4:30 AM when Shabbir and his grandmother were sleeping in the hall where the Electric Vehicles  battery was also plugged in for charging and the family was sleeping. As it exploded, both Shabbir and his grandmother sustained burns. While Grandmother survived with minor injuries, Shabbir sustained 70% burns. He was rushed to a private hospital where he fought for ten days before finally giving up to his injuries  on Monday, 3rd of October.

The media reports claim that it was a detachable 24 Ah Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery, and is believed that it exploded due to overheating. However the family blames electric scooter manufacturers for ‘faulty’ batteries. What do you think about this?
