Dams Running Out Of Water In Maharashtra
Dams in Maharashtra are at their lowest water level in decades, due to delay in monsoons.
Dams in the Marathwada region and dams in Maharashtra, are running very low on water. There is 0.7% water in the dams of Marathwada and 7.7% in the dams of Maharashtra. These are the lowest level in decades. Last year at this same time state dams in Maharashtra were at 18% and dams in Marathwada were at 14%.
As many as 32 of the states dams are at “Dead Storage” which means they cannot flow water as the levels are very low and have to be pumped out. Revenue Minister, Chandrakant Patil has said they have enough water in dams to last till the end of June, but monsoon rains are expected between 17th June and 21st June. People have blamed the growing of Sugar-Cane which needs a lot of water to grow for the shortage of water in the Marathwada region. They say the area is not meant for growing the crop, and have been asking for a ban.
Bottle water business meanwhile is booming as they use groundwater, and the public has accepted the privatization of water.
