Deaf Girl Raped in Tamil Nadu

A brutal assault on a Deaf woman in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district sparked widespread protests, with both Deaf and hearing communities uniting to demand justice.

A shocking case from a remote village in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district has sparked outrage, protests, and rare unity between Deaf and hearing communities demanding justice.

On 17 May 2026, a Deaf woman in her 30s was returning home after work at a rice factory when a factory driver, Sekar, offered her a lift. Trusting him because they worked at the same place, she agreed. Another worker, Marimuthu, was already inside the car.

Instead of taking her home, the men allegedly diverted the route, held her captive overnight, and brutally raped and assaulted her. Unable to call for help because she was Deaf, the woman suffered horrific violence before being abandoned unconscious in the early hours of the morning.

Around 4 am, neighbours found her injured and immediately informed the police. Doctors later confirmed sexual assault and severe physical injuries.

The incident triggered massive protests by villagers, political party members, and Deaf activists. Sivakumar and members of the Pudukkottai District Association of the Deaf travelled 35 km to support the survivor and join the demonstrations demanding strict punishment.

Initially, one accused was arrested while the other absconded. Now, both Marimuthu and Sekar have reportedly been arrested and jailed, with court proceedings underway.

The case has deeply shaken people across Tamil Nadu, while also highlighting the powerful solidarity shown by both Deaf and hearing communities in the fight for justice.
