Flash Floods Wreak Havoc in New York
The recent hurricane Ida has brought heavy rainfall to New York, and regions around it. There is also a tornado warning. Death toll has reached 14.
Recently, hurricane Ida hit the region of New York. This brought heavy rains and flooding. Roads were filled with water, and they looked like rivers. Many major roads had to be shut down in the region of Manhattan, The Bronx and Queens. Only emergency vehicles are allowed on the road now. Everyone else has been asked to stay indoors.
As many as 14 people have lost their lives in this havoc.
Bill De Blasio is the Mayor of New York City. He said that this flooding is a “historic weather event” and the National Weather Service announced a flood warning in New York City for the first time.
Kathy Hochul is the Governor of New York. She declared an emergency too.
Many photos and videos emerged that showed water gushing out of the New York City Subway, and pouring out into the street. Many vehicles were seen submerged in the water, and there was also a lot of garbage floating around the street.
Flight services in the region have been disrupted too.
Amid the havoc created by hurricane Ida, and the flash floods, there is also a warning of a tornado. This could further worsen the condition in the region.
Hurricanes are a common occurrence in the southern part of the United states. However, scientists have warned that there has been a rise in such storm activity, and this is caused by climate change. Such frequent storm activity puts the lives of many coastal communities at risk.
