The Democratic Republic of the Congo has always had a rich reserve of natural deposits like gold, timber, diamonds, and minerals. In a bizarre discovery, villagers in Congo’s Luhihi, located in the Kivu province, discovered gold in the soil of a mountain located in the area. A video was shared on social media by freelance journalist Ahmad Algohbary that showed dozens of villagers flooding the mountain in Luhihi. In one of the videos, the locals are seen using shovels and other tools to dig the ground in a bid to extract gold from the soil. Some were even seen using their bare hands. Algohbary wrote on Twitter that the video is from the Republic of the Congo that shows an entire mountain filled with gold was discovered! The villagers were surprised by this discovery. They dug the soil of the mountain.
Another video showed the locals taking the gold home and washing the dirt off and collecting them in metal containers. Venant Burume Muhigirwa, South Kivu Mines Minister said that after the news spread about the gold mountain there were lots and lots of people who came to dig the gold. So, the authorities had to ban mining in the village. Muhigirwa said that the mining activities have been suspended temporarily in the area. This way the authorities will be able to register the artisanal miners properly with mining regulators. Artisanal gold mining is common across Congo in which miners use rudimentary tools to extract minerals. Last year, a UN Group of Experts said that North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri provinces reported official production of just over 60 kilograms of artisanal gold in 2019, yet exported over 70 kg, suggesting a massive underreporting of production.
