Haiti Earthquake : 1,500 Dead & More than 6,000 Injured

Haiti was hit by a very strong earthquake on Saturday 14 August morning. The massive earthquake that killed more than 1,500 people. Hospitals have been overwhelmed with the influx of more than 6,000 injured patients, and workers were at a loss with how they might cope. Hospitals are full patients have been beds in beds outside hospital or wherever there is space. The earthquake also destroyed more than 37,000 homes. 

Now after the earthquake weather experts Haiti is going to receive very heavy rainfall, floods and even landslides. They have named the tropical storm ‘Grace’. It is expected to hit Haiti as well as its neighboring country Dominican Republic. Roads already made impassable by the quake could be further damaged by the rains, so aid teams are racing to get essential provisions to the quake-hit region before the rain storm starts. Search and rescue teams have been arriving from the United States and Chile, with more on the way from Mexico. Cuban medical teams are already in Haiti and helping people. A 26 year old woman who was helping at a hospital in Port-Salut said, “We're really not doing well psychologically. We have absolutely no idea how we are going to get through this. There are women here who were pregnant but lost their baby because they fell or were injured.”

This is not the first time Haiti has experienced such an earthquake. A similar earthquake in January 2010 left much of Port-au-Prince - capital of Haiti - and nearby cities in ruins, killing more than 200,000. Currently Haiti is facing many problems. In July 2021, Haiti President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in his home by a team of gunmen. The president was shot 12 times and had bullet wounds to his forehead and several to his torso. His left eye had been gouged out and bones in his arm and in his ankle had been broken. Elections to elect a new President are on hold due to the earthquake. Prime Minister Ariel Henry is governing the country. The country is one of the poorest countries in the world and has difficulty managing the COVID-19 pandemic. Now the earthquake has made things worse.
