India Unanimously Elected to UNSC

India was elected to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member with 184 of the 192 votes.

The United Nations Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, charged with ensuring international peace and security. They recommend the admission of a new United Nations General Assembly and approving any changes to the UN Charter. The Security Council has 15 members. Five are permanent members. They are the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia and China. 10 are non-permanent members. Half the non-permanent members are elected every year, each for a two-year term. 

In June 2019, 55 members from the Asia - Pacific group, had unanimously (all members agreed) to propose India’s name for the election. Countries like China & Pakistan who do not have a good relationship with India also supported India’s nomination. 

Out of 193 members, India received 184 votes. They will be non-permanent members for two years. Besides India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway also became non-permanent members. T S Tirumurti, the Indian permanent representative to the UN said in a video-recorded message. He said, “ We are very happy to have received the support and confidence of the members. India has become a member at a very important time. 

While working with the UN they will have a Five-S approach: Samman (respect), Samvad (dialogue), Sahyog and Shanti and Samriddhi to create. This is India’s eighth two-year term. It hopes to use this chance to become a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.
