Indian Social Worker Forced to Work as Maid in Kuwait
An Indian social workers was forced to work as a maid in Kuwait.
38 year old Sara Shaikh from Mumbai was offered a job by a man called Kasim in Kuwait. He was the proprietor of a placement agency. Sara and her husband were supposed to leave from Hyderabad together. Her visa was stamped hours before their departure but her husband’s visa was not stamped. So she decided to go by herself.
In Kuwait she met another agent named Ali. He made her work as a maid for an Arab family. There she worked for 15 hours daily. She managed to call Ali one day and told him that this wasn't the kind of job he had promised her.
He then took her to his home and made her work there. He spiked her drinks and assaulted her. He forced her to work with another Arab Family. Over there Sara managed to contact her Husband. Her husband contacted a NGO called the Harmony Foundation. With their help Sara Managed to run away to the Indian Embassy by catching a taxi. In Kuwait the embassy can not enter a private residence.
Once she reached the embassy they filed a case against Ali and had him arrested. The authorities retrieved her passport from ali and she was bought safely back to India.
The Ministry of External Affairs said that if anyone wants to work in any of the Gulf countries, they must register on online at the government website. Working with placement agencies is extremely dangerous.
