Indian Deaf Athletes Win 16 Medals at 2021 Deaflympics
India have won 16 medals at the Deaflympics 2021 so far. This includes eight golds, one silver and seven bronze.
Deaflympics 2021 is currently being held in the city of Caxias in Brazil. This international tournament started on May 1 and ended on May 15 with around 2,100 athletes from 72 countries participating at different Games.
The Games were scheduled to take place from December 5 to 21 last year but were postponed to May 2022 due to COVID-19. India, meanwhile, has sent a total of 65 Deaf athletes to compete in 11 different sports.
We had released a news about this earlier. You can check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbhR8ne8mUg
That time Deaf Indian athletes had won 3 medals. Dhanush Srikanth won 1 gold medal in air rifle, Shourya Saini won bronze medal for air rifle and the Indian badminton mixed team won the gold medal. In the latest update India has won a total of 16 medals! seven gold medals, one silver and five bronze medals. India held the 8th position in the points table. This India’s most brilliant performance in history. At the 2017 Deaflympics in Turkey Indian athletes won only five medals – 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze.
Here are some interesting highlights:
Deaf wrestler Virender Singh managed to bag his fifth straight Deaflympics medal with a bronze.
Golfer Diksha Dagar won a gold medal. Prithvi Sekhar & Jafreen Shaik won bronze medal in tennis mixed doubles. This proves that Deaf athletes are at par with hearing and can do anything. We hope that the government continues to encourage Deaf athletes so that they can achieve medals for India and make India proud.
