Kartik Vasudev, a resident of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh was shot dead outside a subway station in Toronto, Canada on Thursday 7th April evening. His death has come as a huge shock to the nation.
Kartik's father Jitesh Vasudev and mother Pooja said that their child had started out on his journey to Canada – something he had been planning and researching since clearing class 10. He had been researching everything related to Canada for the last three years and took IELTS also. He wanted to work in digital marketing in future. He had been working for an Instagram account also. He was good at his work, and Kartik cracked the exams and got admission at Seneca University in Toronto. Kartik had left for Canada on January 4. He was studying digital management and was in his first year. The family said it was the first time Kartik was living away from his family. His offline classes were yet to begin. He had been studying online till now. The family had told Kartik that even though they were not very rich, they would keep sending him money and support him financially.
However, Karthik said he wanted to be independent and decided to work in a Mexican restaurant. It was a one-and-a-half-hour journey from his residence. He would take a bus, then a metro and then again a bus to reach his workplace. Just a few days ago he got his first salary. He wanted to buy an iPhone with it and he did. He was very happy. His mother said Kartik never had a problem with anyone nor did he talk of any trouble to him in Canada. On Thursday 7th April, he got off at Sherbourne Station since his manager had asked for a package to be picked up. He was on his way to work when he was shot dead on Thursday. It is estimated that he was shot multiple times near the station. As per officials, the criminal is yet to be arrested, however, according to his family it is not a case of robbery as none of the items was stolen, and they want justice to be served at the earliest possible time.
Now there has been another update in this news. Another man named Elijah Eleazar Mahepath (35) was shot dead in Toronto in the same way as Kartik Vasudev. Elijah had gone to the grocery store to buy a few things when he was shot multiple times by strangers. The police then intensified their investigation and have now arrested a black man named Richard Jonathan Edwin (39). The police suspect he is the shooter of Karthik and Elijah. The police also found many guns and bullets from Edwin and they feel he was planning to shoot more people. However, the police feel that Edwin did not know Karthik & Elijah and feel it was a random shooting. Edwin has not committed any crime in the past. A candlelight vigil has been held in memory of Karthik in Toronto. Karthik’s father has said, ‘I was informed about Edwin’s arrest by Canadian police officials and that it was a random shooting. This was not a normal incident, no normal person shoots two strange people. I feel the police are hiding the real reason of Karthik’s murder because they want to protect the image of Toronto. Karthik’s body will arrive in Ghaziabad on Saturday 16 April. We will perform the last rituals. We will go to Canada to follow up on the legal proceedings and ensure that the killer does not get away with small punishment.”
