Is Ranveer Singh Playing Major Mohit Sharma in Dhurandhar?
The story explains the real-life bravery of Major Mohit Sharma and clarifies that Ranveer Singh’s film Dhurandhar is a fictional spy thriller, not based on his life.
Before revealing details about Ranveer Singh’s character in the film Dhurandhar, it is important to understand a real-life story that is far more intense and inspiring.
In 2004, terrorism was at its peak in the Shopian region of Jammu and Kashmir. Terror group Hizbul Mujahideen was very active, led by commanders Abu Torara and Abu Sabzar. They were planning attacks on the Indian Army and recruiting local youth by filling them with anger and hatred.
During this time, a young local man named Iftikhar Bhatt approached the commanders and said he wanted to join the terror group. He claimed that the Indian Army had killed his brother and that he wanted revenge. Believing his story, the commanders recruited him.
Soon, Iftikhar suggested a detailed plan to ambush Army patrols. He had strong knowledge of routes, Army movement, and weapons, which impressed the commanders. Slowly, they began trusting him and shared secret details about their hideouts, weapons, and network.
One evening, while staying in a forest hideout, Iftikhar was serving Kahwa to the two commanders. At that moment, when doubts were raised about his loyalty, Iftikhar suddenly pulled out a hidden handgun and shot both Torara and Sabzar, killing them on the spot.
The big truth was revealed later. Iftikhar Bhatt was actually Major Mohit Sharma, an undercover officer of the Indian Army. This daring mission came to be known as Operation Iftikhar Bhatt. Through it, Major Sharma eliminated two top terrorists and gathered vital intelligence. This story is mentioned in the book India’s Most Fearless.
Major Mohit Sharma was born on 13 January 1978 in Rohtak, Haryana. He was talented in studies, music, and sports. Though he started engineering, his passion for the Army led him to join the NDA. He later became part of the elite Para Special Forces.
In 2009, during an operation in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, Major Sharma and his team were surrounded by terrorists. Even after being badly injured, he continued fighting and killed four terrorists. He later lost his life due to his injuries and was awarded the Ashoka Chakra for his supreme sacrifice.
Before Dhurandhar release, reports claimed that Ranveer Singh was playing Major Mohit Sharma. However, director Aditya Dhar clarified that the film is completely fictional and not a biopic. Ranveer’s character is not based on Major Sharma, though some situations may be inspired by real-life spies.
At the end of the film, a tribute is paid to the “unknown” heroes who serve the nation in secrecy. ISH News also salutes our armed forces and all such bravehearts whose sacrifices often remain unknown to the world.
