Jagdeep Dhankhar becomes the 14th Vice President of India

After the election of Draupadi Murmu as India’s next president, Jagdeep Dhankhar has been appointed as the next vice president of India.

The elections to the 14th Vice President of India was held on 6 August 2022. The BJP nominated  Jagdeep Dhankhar as their candidate for the post of vice-President and the opposition party elected Margaret Alva from Congress as their candidate. The 80-year-old  Margaret Alva is a Congress veteran and has served as governor of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.

Today we will tell you how the Vice-President is elected. All the MPs of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha voted to elect the VP. However, 4 seats of Jammu & Kashmir are vacant, 1 seat of Tripura is vacant and 3 nominated members of Rajya Sabha are also vacant. 

Twelve members are nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India for a six-year term for their contributions towards arts, literature, sciences, and social services. Plus 55 MPs were absent. So only 725 MPs voted in the election. 528 MP voted for Jagdeep Dhankhar and 182 MP voted for Margaret Alva. From traveling six kilometers to his school as a teenager in Rajasthan, Dhankar has become the next Vice-President of India. He will be replacing  M. Venkaiah Naidu. Dhankar is scheduled to take oath on 11 August 2022. A Jat from Rajasthan, Dhankhar was born in Kithana in 1951.

He grew up in a family of farmers who helped him stay connected to his roots. He later moved to Sainik School in Chittorgarh where he enthusiastically bought dictionaries to school to improve his English. The 71-year-old went on to study Physics after finishing his school education at Jaipur's Maharaja College. He later studied LLB from the Rajasthan University between 1978-79 and registered in the BAR the same year. A "tremendous" lawyer, Dhankhar became the youngest president of the Rajasthan High Court BAR Association.

He practiced in the Rajasthan High Court and moved to the Supreme Court.Dhankhar entered politics in 1989. 

In 1990, he served as the MoS (Minister of State) for Parliamentary Affairs. Earlier he was in the Congress Party but later moved to BJP. He has also fought several legal cases against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders. Dhankhar was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal in 2019.

During his stint, he got into several diplomatic spats with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and penned many letters expressing his disappointment in the state government.The Trinamool Congress (TMC) often accused him of being a mouthpiece of the BJP, and even requested former President Ram Nath Kovind to remove him from the post. Now Dhankar has become the VP of India and we all are excited to see his work.
