Jio launched its video conferencing app, JioMeet leading users to point out similarities to the famous Zoom App.

With the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown, most of the people are working from home and many people used a lot of video conferencing apps. One of the most downloaded apps was Zoom. Recently, Jio launched its video conferencing app, JioMeet. The app had a lot of similarities to Zoom. Zoom Video Communications' India head Sameer Raje said that he was "shocked" at the similarities between JioMeet and Zoom app. He said that there were a lot of internal discussions about the legal action but he would not comment on it. Zoom’s lawyers will decide what to do next. The Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps after the Galwan valley clash between India and China where 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives.

After the ban on Chinese apps, many homegrown apps jumped into the fray with skyrocketing download. JioMeet recorded 1 million downloads within a week of its launch. The anti-China feeling had many Indian users doubting if Zoom was a Chinese app. Zoom wrote a statement on Twitter clarifying that it is not a Chinese app. Sameer Raje confirmed the worry among people with regards to the origin of the app. He said that people feel Zoom is of Chinese origin and that the data is shared with China. He said, “We are an American company and we do not share data with any government. People may have forgotten that we have two data centers in India.” Raje also said that Zoom’s team is in touch with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Home Affairs. He said that only technical information about Zoom’s data centres was discussed. He said, “We are not sharing data, we are sharing only technicalities of our platform and how it operates.”
