King Charles III was announced the King on 8 September 2022, upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen consort of the United Kingdom took place on 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey. Trumpet fanfares sounded through London's Westminster Abbey with ceremonial gun salutes across land and sea to mark the first coronation of a British monarch since 1953 Bells pealed in celebration at churches across. Soldiers on foot and horseback staged a 7,000-strong military parade stretching through the streets of the capital.
The Coronation Procession saw members of the royal family head to Buckingham Palace in a spectacular parade for the start of the procession. The procession route began with the royal couple in the Gold State Coach, a historic carriage that was constructed in 1762. The coach, which weighs four tons and was drawn by eight horses on the coronation day, has been used at every coronation.
King Chrales sister, Princess Anne, took part in the Coronation Procession. While many members of the royal family participated in the parade by riding in horse-drawn carriages or cars, Princess Anne was the only royal to ride on horseback. Absent from the Coronation Procession was Prince Harry, who came to the U.K. for the crowning ceremony. The coronation only the second to be televised and the first in colour and streamed online. Much of the two-hour coronation was recognisable to the other monarchs crowned at Westminster Abbey. There were women bishops for the first time. Leaders of Britain's non-Christian faiths and its Celtic languages (Irish language, Scottish language, etc) played a prominent role.
As king, Charles is the supreme governor of the Church of England but heads a more religiously and ethnically diverse country than the one his mother inherited. In another change, the coronation theme showed his lifelong interest in biodiversity and sustainability. Seasonal flowers and foliage from Scotland and other parts of England filled the Westminster abbey.
Single-use plastic and floral foam were banned while all the flowers will be donated to charities helping the elderly and vulnerable. Ceremonial vestments (robe) from previous coronations were reused, and the anointing oil was vegan. More than 2,000 people were invited to attend the coronation and many of those guests were high-profile royals (Kings, Queen, Prince, princesses from other countries) themselves.
King Charles was supported by his sons Prince William and Prince Harry, daughter-in-law Kate Middleton and the Prince and Princess of Wales' three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. While Prince Harry traveled in from California, Meghan Markle remained home with their daughter Princess Lilibet, 23 months, and son Prince Archie whose birthday was on the same day. King Charles was supported by all three of his siblings and their spouses, children and children's spouses.
In a twist of history, four British royals also saw the second coronation of their lifetimes. Four of Queen Elizabeth's cousins who were at her coronation in 1953 also saw King Charles be crowned. Along with members of the British royal family and leaders of the government — like the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak — world leaders from other countries were also present. Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described the coronation as "a proud expression of our history, culture and traditions". The "moment of extraordinary national pride", he said.
India’s Vice President represented the country at the coronation ceremony. Earlier, Jagdeep Dhankar was spotted at Buckingham Palace, shaking hands with King Charles III and Jill Biden, the first lady of the United States. After the crowning at the ancient abbey, many members of the royal family joined Charles and Camilla on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for their first appearance there as King and Queen. Prince Harry did not join in the Buckingham Palace balcony appearance. He instead left the U.K. shortly after his father's crowning ceremony to celebrate his son’s birthday on the same day.
But not everyone is in support of the ceremony. Survey indicates waning support for the monarchy, particularly among younger people, with calls for it to be modernized or even scrapped altogether. People who want an elected head of state protested holding up placards stating "Not my king". Citizens of Britain are struggling with the soaring cost of living and have meanwhile questioned why taxpayers should pay for the coronation, with the bill estimated to be over crores of Rupees. Hundreds of yellow-clad demonstrators gathered among the crowds lining the procession route to stand out from those clad in red, white and blue, and to hold up signs saying "Not My King". Police arrested the leader of an anti-monarchy group and 51 other protestors.
