Langur Cut-Outs Displayed Along G20 Route to Prevent Monkeys
G20 Summit in New Delhi using langur cutouts to scare away monkeys near dignitary venues.
Preparations for the G20 Summit in New Delhi, to be held between September 9 and 10, are in full swing. The Delhi government, along with the Centre, has been working on various projects to beautify the national capital ahead of the global meeting. An interesting aspect of the preparations is the installation of large cutouts of langurs at various G20 venues as well as on the roads of Delhi. The cutouts are so lifelike that people actually could end up mistaking them for actual langurs. Apart from the cutouts, 40 personnel trained to mimic sounds made by langurs will also be deployed. The idea behind installing the cutouts is to scare away monkeys which might end up frequenting the spots that would be visited by foreign dignitaries for the G20 Summit. Langurs are used to scare away monkeys and have been previously engaged in Delhi and other cities, which have witnessed monkey menace. The life-size cutouts of langurs will be seen on Delhi's Sardar Patel Marg as well as the Central Ridge area that's located near Connaught Place. Vice-chairman of New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) Satish Upadhyay said these temporary measures were being taken in coordination with the Delhi Forest Department to ensure that monkeys stay within the forest area and do not interfere with the convoy of dignitaries.
