Mirabai Chanu May Get Gold Medal in Olympics
Mirabai Chanu stands a chance to get gold if Chinese weightlifter fails the dope test.
Indian weightlifter Mirabai Saikhom Chanu, made India proud by winning the silver medal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020, in the 49kg women's category. Now she might have a chance of winning the Gold medal. You all may be confused and wondering if the match is over, how can she win a gold medal. Well let me tell you. Mirabai, had lifted a combined weight of 202 kg in three sets. China's Zhizhi Hou had lifted 210 kg. Since Hou lifted 8kg more than Mirabai, she won the gold and Mirabai won the silver medal. Now the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will test Hou.
Before any match it is very normal for the athletes to undergo such tests. According to the Anti-Doping authorities, they found some suspicious drugs in Hou’s samples. This is why they want to do more detailed tests to find out if she was taking any drugs or not. As per the Olympics rules. if Hou has been found to be using drugs to enhance her stamina, then the Gold medal will be given to Mirabai.
Mirabai Chanu, returned to India on 26 July evening. She was then felicitated by Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw. Vaishnaw said that Mirabai will be given a reward of ? 2 crore. Mirabai, who was working as a ticket inspector in the railways, has also been given a promotion by the minister. Apart from Mirabai, it has been a disappointing show from the Indian athletes as Manika Batra, Sumit Nagal, Sutirtha Mukherjee all crashed out of the Olympics after their respective losses. Indian men's hockey team lost to Australia and the men's archery team too lost to South Korea, in the quarter-finals.
