More Than 1,000 Killed in Afghanistan Earthquake
Heavy rain, threadbare resources and rugged terrain are hampering rescuers in eastern Afghanistan, where a powerful earthquake is reported to have killed more than 1,000 people
Yesterday on 22rd June 2022, a powerful earthquake struck a mountainous region of eastern Afghanistan. The earthquake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale. The earthquake was so powerful that tremors were felt as far away as Pakistan and India. More than 1,000 people died, more than 1,500 were injured and an unknown number of people are still stuck under the rubble. Paktika province has been the worst-hit. A whole village in Gayan has reportedly been destroyed. Rescue efforts are being hampered by heavy rain and lack of resources. Rescue efforts are likely to be complicated since many international NGOs left Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover of the country last year. Survivors and rescuers who spoke to news channels said, villages have been completely destroyed, roads and mobile phone towers are destroyed. People fear that the death toll will rise further. In Afghanistan earthquakes are common. On an average every year around 500 people die in earthquakes, However, in the last 20 years Afghanistan never had such a dangerous earthquake. First time so many people have died.
The Taliban which came to power last year is having a tough time managing the situation. Currently the situation in Afghanistan is very very bad. There is a huge economic problem, lakhs of people are unemployed, there is no money and food to eat. The Taliban is not doing anything to help the poor people. Now the earthquake has made the situation even worse. The head of the United Nations, António Guterres said the UN will give them all support. Health teams, medical supplies, food, and emergency shelters.
