The mumbai local trains are known as the lifeline of mumbai. Since the lockdown in March due to the COVID outbreak, the local strain has stopped working. Currently, a limited number of local trains in Central, Western and Harbour lines are functioning. These trains are only for people working in the essential services such as doctors, police, bank personnel, etc. The Union Home Ministry had told all state governments to lift restrictions on district and inter-state transport, so that business can start and the economy can start recovering. However, the Maharashtra state government has not made any decision about the trains.
A cabinet meeting will be held in mumbai to discuss the restarted local trains. They will also discuss relaxing e-pass rules. Recently, the government allowed journalists to travel by suburban trains for which a QR code will be provided. According to sources, the Maharashtra government may remove all the remaining lockdown restrictions from 1st September and start the local trains as well. The COVID-19 case count in Mumbai stood at 1,35,362 as on August 22 while death toll is 7,388 as per the state government.
