Mumbai: Western Line to Face Cancellation & Delays for 35 Days

Mumbai's Western Line local trains will face delays and cancellations for the next 33 days due to construction work on a new 6th track between Goregaon and Kandivali.

If you’ve been facing delays and cancellations with Mumbai’s Western Line local trains recently, you’re not alone. These issues will continue for the next 33 days as Western Railway is carrying out major construction work to add a 6th track between Goregaon and Kandivali stations.

The project, which started at midnight on 27-28 August 2024, will last for 35 days. During this time, Western Railway will be implementing a series of mega blocks to complete the 4.5-kilometre-long extension. The 6th line currently runs between Khar Road and Goregaon, and this project will extend it to Kandivali to improve the flow of train traffic and enhance service efficiency on the Western Line.

Over these 35 days, there will be 5 major 10-hour blocks scheduled on the 5th, 12th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th of September 2024. These blocks will begin at 10 pm and could result in the cancellation of around 140 suburban trains and the shortening of 60 services on those dates.

In addition to these major blocks, the ongoing construction work is expected to cause further delays and cancellations of regularly scheduled train services.

A senior Western Railway officer explained, “We could have finished the work sooner, but that would have caused greater inconvenience to commuters. So, we stretched it over 35 days to reduce train cancellations and keep things smooth for passengers.”

To minimize disruption during the upcoming festival season, the construction work will be paused from 11th September to 17th September 2024, allowing trains to run as usual during that time.

Once completed, the project will extend the 6th track from Khar Road to Goregaon, reaching Kandivali. The Western Line is expected to extend this 6th line all the way to Borivali by the end of the year.

If you rely on the Western Line for your daily commute, it’s a good idea to check the local train status online and plan your trips accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
