Rains Cause Havoc In Mumbai

After a long wait the rains have finally graced the city. However these rains have led the city to a standstill and led to deaths of many.

After a very long time of no rains, Mumbai was hit with some of the worst rains in the last 10 years. It has been raining heavily for the last four days. Generally the average rainfall in June is 515mm. However since Sunday in just two days it has rained a total of 540mm.This is the highest it has rained in two days, in a decade. The Maharashtra government has declared a public holiday today in Mumbai. The Indian Meteorological Department has said that the rains are going to worsen. CM  Devendra Fadnavis has requested everyone to remain at home and stay safe unless it is an emergency. The Municipal commissioner ordered late at night that All schools and colleges were told to remain closed today 2nd July 2019. 

Private weather agency Skymet has said that Mumbai is in serious risk of flooding between 3rd and 5th July. 200mm of rain is expected per day during that time period.16 people have died due to train related accidents. 2 farmers being killed by a lightning strike while in the fields. Several suburban and long-distance trains have been cancelled. Tracks at Virar and Palghar also waterlogged. Water level on tracks rising. Central Railway suburban services have been suspended between Thane and Mumbai due to waterlogging on the tracks between Thane-Mulund and beyond.

Western Railway suburban services are running between Churchgate-Virar.Frequency may be less between Vasai Road and Virar. Central Railway not running local trains between CSTM and Thane,  till further orders. The Central Railways Tweeted that moving train in such rains is extremely dangerous. This is why many lines would be shut until further notice. The Central and Western Railways are keeping a close watch on the situation and will inform the public if the trains resume. 

Thirteen people were killed and four critically injured after a compound wall crashed in Mumbai's Malad East early this morning. Officials fear that three to five people may be trapped in debris. The government has announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the families. In Kalyan, three, including a three-year-old boy, have been killed after the wall of a school crashed on two houses. 

On Monday night a SpiceJet plane coming from Jaipur overshot the runway during landing due the water collected on the runway. The plane was not damaged and no injuries were reported.Many flights were canceled and were diverted away from the Mumbai airport. They have resumed again and they have said they will be keeping a close eye on the weather and asked all passengers to check the status of there flights before leaving home.We urge all the citizens of Mumbai to remain safe at home with their families.
