Rhea Chakraborty Released from Jail After a Month
After spending almost a month in jail, Rhea Chakraborty has finally been granted bail by the Bombay High Court.
Rhea Chakraborty was arrested on 8th September by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on charges of procuring drugs for Sushant Singh Rajput. They arrested her on the basis of several WhatsApp chats which revealed that she procured drugs for Sushant Singh Rajput. The NCB accused Rhea of being an active member of a drug syndicate and they questioned many high profile celebrities as well. She and her brother Showik Chakraborty have been in Jail for almost a month. Her bail application was rejected by a special court, which is why she applied in the Bombay High Court. In her bail petition, Rhea Chakraborty had said that she and her brother were the sole targets of a witch-hunt by various agencies with no evidence incriminating her. She had alleged that Sushant Singh Rajput "took advantage of those closest to him to sustain his drug habit" and that she had tried to stop him from taking drugs. She also said he was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and his family abandoned him at the peak of his depression. His mental health "deteriorated during the lockdown".
At the bail hearing, the NCB said that celebrities and role models must be strictly dealth if they are found guilty of consuming drugs. This will set an example to the common man. The Bombay High Court has disagreed with the NCB and said that everyone is equal before the law. The court also said that just because she financed the drugs for Sushant, does not mean she was part of a drug syndicate. The drugs in question were not for commercial purposes. The Bombay High Court has granted her bail but rejected her brother’s application. The court has told her to pay a bail bond of Rs. 1 lakh and mark her presence daily at the nearest police station for 10 days after her release. She also has to hand over her passport and cannot travel abroad without the court's permission.
Sushant Singh Rajput's employees Dipesh Sawant and Samuel Miranda have also been granted bail. Rhea Chakraborty's lawyer Satish Maneshinde said, “We are delighted by the order. Truth and Justice have prevailed.” The Mumbai Police had warned the media against "chasing celebrities and others" and "endangering lives" shortly after Rhea was given bail. Rhea left the jail in a car with its windows covered in newspapers. It drove through a huge crowd of reporters, cameramen, policemen, and others gathered outside the jail.
