Russia Ukraine War: 11yr Old Boy Walks 1,000km Alone to Reach Slovakia

An 11-year-old boy from Ukraine has crossed the border into Slovakia with just a plastic bag, a passport and a telephone number written on his hand.

The war between Russia and Ukraine entered the 12th day on Sunday. Both sides have suffered heavy economic and humanitarian losses. All eyes are on the third round of talks between the two countries, which will be held on Monday. On Saturday, Russia announced a ceasefire in two cities of Ukraine but within a few hours, this ceasefire was broken. A total of 351 civilians in Ukraine have been confirmed dead since Russia invaded the country and at least 707 civilians were injured. On March 6, Dmytro Kuleba, Foreign Minister, Ukraine, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the ongoing conflict. He also asked leaders of countries that have special relationships with PM Modi to appeal to him to intervene amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict to end the war. He further accused Russia of spreading misinformation on foreign students, including those from India being held hostage by Ukrainian forces. PM Modi is expected to call Ukraine PM Volodymyr Zelensky today to talk about the war. Some people have found a new way to help war-hit Ukraine, they are booking Airbnb spaces not to stay but to aid the residents.

On March 2 and March 3, guests from around the world booked over 61,000 nights in Ukraine to help the Ukrainian people. Even though people can’t travel to Ukraine they are paying for the Air BnB to support the people monetarily. More than 1.2 million refugees have now left Ukraine since February 24, according to the UN as of March 3. Of the 1,209,976 refugees who have fled, a majority of them, 53.7 per cent, crossed into Poland. Others have gone to countries including Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova, and Romania. An 11-year-old from Zaporizhzhia in southeast Ukraine carried a backpack, a plastic bag and a passport, and had a telephone number written on his hand. His mother sent him alone to walk 1,000km to cross the Slovakia border. This is because his parents could not cross the border with him. When the boy reached the Slovakia border the Slovakia soldiers used the phone number on the boy’s hand and contacted his relatives in Slovakia.
