Sikh Man Attacked in Hate Crime in US
Harwinder Singh Dodd a Sikh man was working at a supermarket in Oregon In America. On 21 January 2019, 24 year old white man Andrew Ramsey entered the shop.He asked Harwinder for rolling papers for cigarettes. Since Andrew did not have an ID, Harwinder refused to give them to him.
When Harwinder asked Andrew to leave, Andrew got very angry and attacked Harwinder. He pulled his beard, punched him in the face, he pulled him to the ground and kept kicking him. Harwinder was bleeding a lot and he was badly injured. People around them had to hold Andrew till the police arrived.
The police arrested Andrew. They have filed a complaint of hate crime and assault against him. A police officer said that Andrew threw a shoe at Harwinder. He even tried to remove his head covering.
In August 2018, in a week two Sikh men were assaulted in California in America. South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) has said that in 2018, there was a 45% increase in violence against Indians, Sikhs in America.
