The Kerala Story Earns Rs.150 Crore in 12 Days
Here are the most recent updates on the most tending movie ‘The Kerala Story’ and her lead actress!
The most controversial movie of today’s time is definitely ‘The Kerala Story.’ Adah Sharma, the lead actress has been getting death threats as well.
The Kerala Story has been facing backlash from groups who have claimed that the film is not based on facts, and hatred against the Muslim community. Devoleena Bhattacharya, an Indian TV actress stated, "It's not always like that. My husband is a Muslim and came with me to watch the movie and he appreciated it. He neither took it as an offence nor he felt it was against his religion. And I feel that's how every Indian should be like."
Recently a twitter-user tweeted, “My friend Nidhi is in a relationship with a Muslim. She casually asked her boyfriend to watch Kerala Story. He not only refused but also abused her & accused her of being Islamophobic. She got scared & asked her boyfriend why is he being so rude & how can she be Islamophobic when she is dating a Muslim." She further added that her boyfriend said if she is not anti-Islamic, she should convert to Islam and marry him. She agreed. But, she still insisted on seeing the film. She then joined a friend to watch the movie and after the film, she called her boyfriend and broke up. Devoleena replied to this tweet and said, "This is the social impact that Kerala Story is having. They want to outlaw the movie for this reason. Everyone has begun to awaken."
With so many controversies, bans, and protests for the film, the safety of the film’s team has come under threat. Actress Adah Sharma, the movie’s cast and the director Sudipto Sen, met with an accident on 14th May 2023. The incident occured in Telangana. The team responded saying everyone is safe. Despite all these, Adah Sharma wanted to go to the theatres and watch the film once. But she asked the Mumbai Police team to extend their support by sending one of the cops from their team to accompany her. The Mumbai Police promptly sent a squad of policemen to ensure her safety. Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana have made the movie tax-free. At the same time, The Kerala Story remains banned in West Bengal. Makers of the film say that the Tamil Nadu government has imposed a shadow ban on the film, meaning they are putting an unofficial ban on the film. The producers of the film had challenged the West Bengal and Tamil Nadu government in the Supreme Court and said that they were losing out on lot of money because of it. They demanded the movie be allowed to play.
On 12th May 2023, the Supreme Court asked, ‘West Bengal is not different from any other part of the country. Why will the state of West Bengal not allow the film to run?. If people do not like the movie, they will not watch the movie. So why has West Bengal banned the film?.’ Meanwhile, the Supreme Court also asked the Tamil Nadu government, to specify all the measures taken to provide security in theatres screening the film. The West Bengal government has told the Supreme Court that the decision was taken because the film contains “hate speech” and “manipulated facts” which can hurt communal harmony and disturb the law and order situation.
Responding to the court, the state said the state’s duty to maintain law and order and prohibit the exhibition of a film were policy matters where courts should not interfere. The film continues to remain banned in West Bengal. However it has been seen that boys and girls from Alipurduar and Cooch Behar of West Bengal are going to Assam to watch the movie. As Alipurduar and Coochbehar districts of West Bengal share borders with the state of Assam and well connectivity is available, it’s easy to go to Assam and watch the movie.
Besides, recently former BJP MP of Alipurduar, Dasharath Tirkey arranged a bus to Assam to watch the movie. The Tamil Nadu government told the Supreme Court on Tuesday the government did not impose any shadow ban on the film ‘The Kerala Story’ and the theatres stopped screening the film due to poor audience response. Inspite of all these things, The Kerala Story has been running exceptionally well in theatres the movie has collected around Rs.150 crores in 12 days.
Currently, On 12th May 2023, the movie went international in 37 countries. Comprising more than 200 screens alone in the United States and Canada. After everything was finalised for screening in the UK, it was announced at the end moment that the British Board of Film Certification had not given the film an age-rating which is why the film has been delayed.
