TRUMP 2.0: Is It Good or Bad for India?

Donald Trump’s re-election could bring big changes for India in trade, economy, and international relations, with both positive and challenging effects.

As Donald Trump prepares for a new term as President of the United States, there’s a lot of talk about how his victory could affect India. In this article, we’ll explore some key areas where Trump’s policies might impact India—both positively and negatively.

Strong Ties with PM Modi:

Trump and India’s Prime Minister Modi share a friendly relationship, and Trump has often spoken highly of Modi, calling him the “nicest person.” However, even good friends sometimes face challenges. Trump has called India the “tariff king” due to the high taxes India places on American products. Because of this, he might increase taxes on Indian products sold in the US, making them more expensive. If this happens, it could weaken the Indian Rupee.

Changes to US Citizenship Rules:

Under current American law, any child born in the US automatically becomes a citizen, even if the parents aren’t citizens or Green Card holders. Trump, who wants to reduce immigration, may try to change this rule. This could impact Indian families living in the US without US citizenship or a Green Card. However, changing this rule is not easy and might face challenges in the US Supreme Court.

Impact on India-Iran Relations:

Trump has imposed many sanctions on Iran in the past, and he might continue this approach. This could create issues for the Chabahar Port project, which India and Iran are developing together. Trump might pressure India to reduce cooperation with Iran, affecting this important trade route.

Possible Easing of Trade with Russia:

India imports a lot of oil and other products from Russia. Since Trump is friendly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he might reduce sanctions on Russian goods like oil and wheat. This could make it easier for India to buy these products, helping to reduce inflation.

Opportunity Through “China + One” Policy:

Trump has openly spoken about reducing dependency on China, pushing for a “China + One” policy. This could be a great chance for India, as more global companies might look to set up operations here instead of China. This shift could create more job opportunities for Indian workers.

Support for Hindus Worldwide:

Trump has raised concerns over attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and has promised to protect Hindus from discrimination. This could strengthen US-India ties, especially since Trump’s team includes several leaders of Indian origin, like Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, and Bobby Jindal. Trump has also said he wants to protect Hindus worldwide, which might be welcomed by many in India.

Trump’s Approach to Pakistan:

During his first term, Trump stopped providing military aid to Pakistan, which was a favorable move for India. If he continues this stance, India may have an advantage in dealing with Pakistan.

Shift in US Foreign Policy:

India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has mentioned that the US might become more “isolated,” focusing on its own growth instead of global conflicts. Trump’s disinterest in NATO also shows that he’s less likely to involve the US in international issues, which could affect European countries and Ukraine more than it does India.

Trump Towers in India:

Finally, you may soon see luxurious “Trump Towers” across India in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Noida. Although Trump won’t be personally involved in building these towers, builders in India are paying to use his name for marketing luxury apartments and offices. The starting price for properties in these towers is a whopping ?25 Crore!

Trump’s win could bring many changes for India in trade, economy, and even international relations. We’ll have to wait and see how it all unfolds.
