The body of a 18 - 19 year old college girl was found in a hostel room in Mumbai. The girl hailed from Akola in Maharashtra, was a student of government polytechnic college in Bandra and stayed at the government-run Savitri Phule Women's Hostel in the posh Marine Drive area of Mumbai. The girl was missing and had been untraceable since 6th June 2023. Her hostel room on the fourth floor was locked from the outside. The police were informed accordingly. When the police entered the room, they found the victim lying dead with a dupatta wrapped around her neck. Police suspected that she was murdered after rape. Her body has been sent for postmortem. During the investigation, it was noticed that a 30-year-old man, Om Prakash Kanaujia working at the hostel as a guard and helper had been absconding and was untraceable ever since the incident. Following this, the police launched a hunt to nab Kanaujia. However, around 5:30 pm on the same day, the suspect was reported dead at a nearby railway station. It is said that Kanaujia went to Charni Road station, behind the hostel and lay on tracks. He died after being run over by a train coming from Churchgate station. The police found the keys of the girl's room in his pocket. The accused had locked the girl's room and took the key with him. The girl’s friend said that the watchman had been troubling and molesting her since 15 days. After this incident, the dead girl's father has taken a stance that we will not take the girl's body into custody until a case is registered against the hostel authorities ad according to him

Just 2 days after the hostel murder, another murder has shocked Mumbai. This one is similar to the Shraddha Walkar case. A 36-year-old woman Saraswati Vaidya was allegedly killed by her 56 year old live-in-partner Manoj Sahani and chopped into several pieces in Mira Road. They had been in a live-in relationship since 3 years. The residents of the building had called the police on 7th June 2023, complaining that a foul smell was emanating from a flat. When police reached the apartment, Sahani opened the door. He tried to flee on seeing the cops. But was nabbed with the help of the residents. When police entered the flat, they found only a few parts as the accused had reportedly disposed of some of the body parts over the past two to three days. According to sources, the accused would cut the dead body into pieces and put the pieces in a pressure cooker, boil them and then grind them in a mixer. He would fill these pieces in a bag and throw them in the drain behind the building. The residents said that Sahani was seen feeding stray dogs in the locality over the past two to three days — something that he had never done in the past. He used to use his bike for this. All the items used in the crime and the bike have been seized by the police. Sahani has confessed to the crime. However, the police are now investigating why he commited the crime.
