UP Man Cuts Off Own Foot to Apply for Disability Quota After Failing NEET Twice

A NEET aspirant from Uttar Pradesh allegedly cut off his own foot to qualify for the disability quota after repeated exam failures.

Every year, millions of students appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to secure admission to India’s top medical colleges. Many aspirants study for 10 to 15 hours a day, sacrifice their social life, and live under constant pressure to clear one of the toughest exams in the country.

Suraj Bhaskar, a 24-year-old from Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh, was one such aspirant. He held a D Pharma degree and had been preparing for NEET for the past three years. Despite multiple attempts, he failed to secure admission due to high cut-off marks. After failing twice, he reportedly became extremely desperate to become a doctor.

According to Suraj, on the night of 18 January 2026, he was sleeping alone in an under-construction house when two unknown men attacked him around midnight. He claimed they beat him until he lost consciousness. When he woke up around 5 am, he found that his toes and foot had been cut off, leaving only the heel. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Suraj’s elder brother, Akash Bhaskar, filed a police complaint. During the investigation, police found several inconsistencies. There were no signs of forced entry, no witnesses, and no evidence of an attack. Police also discovered that Suraj had earlier approached Banaras Hindu University to obtain disability documents, which were rejected.

Investigators believe Suraj may have cut off his own foot to qualify for the disability quota in NEET, where cut-off marks are lower. Injections suspected to be anaesthetic were recovered nearby. The investigation is ongoing, and Suraj is currently under medical care.
