A quarantine facility is supposed to be a safe haven for coronavirus-infected patients, but one such place in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, has turned out to be nothing more than a disgrace. The Sharda Group of Institution in Sikandra, Agra is a quarantine facility for COVID-19 patients. Biscuits, tea, and other essential food items were thrown at inmates from outside the gate by healthcare workers.
Clips of the shameful incident have gone viral. In both the videos the people were being treated worse than animals. In one clip, a man, in protective gear can be seen throwing biscuit packets while those on the other side, stretched their hands to catch them. Mineral water bottles were also kept outside the gate as inmates tried holding them. The people are suspected to have contracted the infection, but most of them haven't even been tested. Locked away from families, they don't get adequate food and some of them sleep on empty stomachs. Hygiene at the facility is also improper. Empty food packets lie on the ground, the washbasins are dirty, and water taps leak most of the time.
In the video, a woman said,” This is what is being done to isolated people. We were told we will have a medical check-up done at some point, but this has not happened. There are no proper arrangements for food and water, "In an April 21 letter, Agra mayor Naveen Jain sent a letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
In the letter he begged Yogi to save Agra from becoming the next Wuhan (the Chinese city from where coronavirus emerged), Jain said the UP government is failing to control infections. Agra has the highest number of infections in UP. Jain said that people aren't tested in quarantine centers for days at a stretch.
