What Is the India–Nepal Border Dispute About?

India-Nepal ties remain strained as the decades-old border dispute over Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura fuels political controversy and diplomatic tensions.

India-Nepal relations have once again come under strain as the long-running border dispute over Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura continues to spark political controversy in Nepal.

Tensions escalated after Nepal reportedly sought historical records from the UK regarding the dispute, while criticism mounted against Prime Minister Balendra Shah over his handling of relations with India.

The controversy deepened when Shah remarked in Parliament that Nepal had also encroached on Indian territory in some places, triggering backlash from opposition leaders and the media.

The dispute has gained fresh attention after India and China agreed to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through the strategically important Lipulekh route.

Nepal objected to the move, reiterating its claim over the region, while India has consistently maintained that there is no border dispute and that its territorial boundaries are clear.

The debate has also revived discussions within Nepal about alleged Chinese encroachments along the Nepal-China border, an issue that critics say has received far less political attention.

Despite the disagreements, India and Nepal share deep cultural, religious and people-to-people ties. With centuries of shared history and faith connecting the two nations, many hope the issue is resolved through dialogue, diplomacy and mutual respect.
