WHO Stops Supply of COVAXIN

The World Health Organisation said on Saturday it has suspended supply through United Nations agencies of COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin, produced by India's Bharat Biotech.

Before vaccines can be given to people, the World Health Organisation (WHO) checks it properly and then gives permission to give it to people. The WHO had given approval to Bharat Biotech to start using its COVAXIN vaccine on people. So far, over 30.82 crore doses of Covaxin have been administered to people above the age of 15 in India. In India Bharat Biotech is manufacturing its COVAXIN vaccines in factories in Hyderabad, Malur in Karnataka and Ankleshwar in Gujarat. Between 14 March and 22 March, the WHO conducted an inspection of all the factories where the vaccines were made. The WHO was not happy with the factories and told Bharat Biotech to stop supply of the vaccine and made changes in their factory equipment and meet the requirements mentioned by Bharat Biotech. On 2nd April 2022, the World Health Organisation said that it has suspended supply of COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin, produced by India's Bharat Biotech, through United Nations agencies. The WHO said the vaccine is effective and it is completely safe. Even Bharat Biotech said that the vaccine is completely safe and there is nothing to worry about. Those who took COVAXIN vaccine should not be worried and the vaccine certificates that were given to them are still valid.

The company said that during the pandemic the company did not have access to high quality equipment so they had to use slightly less quality. They had planned to make changes to the equipment once the pandemic was over. Now that the WHO has asked them to make an upgrade, they will do it. The WHO told countries that the supply of COVAXIN will stop for a while so countries will have to manage.
