DIY Diwali Diyas - Best Out of Waste
Go green this Diwali with unique, eco-friendly diyas from orange/lemon peels, bottle caps, or wheat flour.
Diwali is the victory of good over evil and of right over wrong. But, unfortunately, nowadays during Diwali there is a lot of air and plastic pollution that affect the environment. The essence of Diwali is merry lighting and diyas which are an important part of the celebrations. To make the festive season greener and save the environment, we are sharing 2 ways in which you can create your own diyas using household items that are easily available!
1. Orange Peel or Lemon Peel Diyas
- Cut the oranges or lemons into two equal halves
- Scoop out the fruit from inside and use the peel to make your organic candle.
- Add some oil, a wick and let it sit for some time.
- Your orange / lemon lamp is ready.
One more important benefit of this diya is that it will look unique and also give out a refreshing scent (smell).
2. Bottle Cap Diyas
- Collect crayons of different colors you want your Diyas to be of and remove the paper from the crayon. You can also use candle wax also.
- Put the crayons in an empty, clean vessel.
- Take the pre-waxed wicks and place one in each bottle cap. (You can place a wax paper or even newspaper below the bottle caps so in case you spill some wax, your floor or platform won't get dirty)
- Fill the cooking pan with some water and place the can or vessel in it. Boil the water in the pan which will melt the crayons.
- Pour the melted crayons or wax into the bottle cap, add some liquid from your favourite perfume of better smell and let it cool for 1-2 hours.
- Cut the wick to the size you want.
3. Wheat Flour Diya
- In a bowl, put the wheat flour and start adding water while you knead the dough tight.
- Make small balls using your palm. Press your thumb in the center of each ball to create a cavity
- Now start shaping the balls into diya by flattening the sides. Make sure to make a pointed protrusion where you will place your wick.
- Pour oil and place the wick. Your diya is ready!
- Additionally if you want, you can bake them at 200 degrees celsius for 20 mins
Let the diyas dry and then paint them in colours you’d like. Now, you can light numerous diyas that you yourself have created and have a colourful and a unique Diwali.
