Get Rid of Hiccups Using Home Remedies

Hiccups are repeated sudden movements of the Diaphragm that you can't control. The diaphragm is the muscle that separates your chest from your stomach area and plays an important role in breathing. A sudden movement in your diaphragm causes your vocal cords to suddenly close, producing a "hic" sound. Eating a large meal, drinking alcoholic or carbonated beverages, or getting excited suddenly may cause hiccups. For most people, hiccups usually last only a few minutes. Rarely, hiccups may continue for months and may be a sign of an underlying medical issue. Hiccups could be sudden and annoying to deal with, especially when nothing seems to help you get rid of them. However, there are many natural and home remedies that you can put to use and break free from hic..hiccups! Here are some of the home remedies that you can try.

  1. Sugar

Sugar is a popular home remedy for hiccups and has been used for ages to treat them instantly. All you have to do is, suck on a spoonful of white or brown sugar for about 10 seconds and then swallow it. Once done, take a big sip of water.

  1. Lemon

Place a wedge of lemon in your mouth and either nibble on it and sip on its juice or keep it in your mouth and suck on it for a while.

  1. Pickle or pickle juice

Another way to instantly stop hiccups is to consume your favorite pickle or  take a few drops of pickle juice on your tongue or suck on a pickle. 

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Add a teaspoon of Apple cider vinegar to 1/3 cup of water and drink the mixture.

Usually, you may find respite in the first two sips only. If not, you can continue taking more sips until your hiccups go away.

  1. Cardamom

Take a glass of water and boil it. Add a teaspoon of Cardamom Powder and let it steep for 15 minutes. Strain the water and let it cool a little until it becomes lukewarm. Sip on it slowly to find respite from hiccups. 

  1. Other remedies 

  • Breathe into a paper bag (do not put it over your head), 

  • Pull your knees up to your chest and lean forward, 

  • Sip ice-cold water 

  • Hold your breath for a short time
