Hanuman Jayanti is a Hindu religious festival that celebrates the birth of Hindu God Hanuman. Hanuman is immensely worshipped throughout India and Nepal. Hanuman is also prayed in South East Asian countries. This festival is celebrated on different days in different parts of India. In most states of India, the festival is observed in Chaitra. This year Hanuman Jayanti is being celebrated today on 27th April 2021. On Hanuman Jayanti, many devotees observe a day-long fast. The famous Hanuman Chalisa is read by most people. Hanuman is a Hindu god and divine vanara companion of Lord Rama. He is an ardent devotee of Rama. According to Hindu legends, Hanuman was born to mother Anjani and father Kesari. Hanuman is also called the son of the deity Lord Vayu According to some legends Hanuman is the incarnation of God Shiva.
According to one legend, in his childhood, Hanuman was hungry and saw the rising red-colored sun. Mistaking it for a ripe fruit, he leapt up to eat it. The King of Gods Indra intervened by hitting him with his ‘Vajra’. It hit Hanuman on his jaw, and he fell to the earth dead with a broken jaw. God of Wind Vayu became upset and withdrew all the air on Earth. The lack of air created immense suffering to all living beings. Then God Shiva intervened and resuscitated Hanuman, which in turn prompted Vayu to return to the living beings.
Lord Indra, granted Hanuman a blessing that his body would be very strong. Lord Vayu granted him a blessing that he will be as fast as wind. Lord Brahma also granted Hanuman a blessing that he can move to any place and he cannot be stopped; Lord Vishnu granted a weapon named "Gada" and all the other gods too blessed him. Hence these wishes make Hanuman an immortal, who has unique powers and strength. Many believe that Hanuman is still alive on earth. Hanuman played a major role in searching for God Ram’s wife Sita in Lanka, in rescuing her. He also saved Rama’s brother Lakshman’s life by flying to the Himalayas to get a herb. But he wasn’t sure which was the right herb so he lifted the entire mountain.
When Hanuman was asked for proof to show his devotion to Rama, Hanuman tore open his chest, which had an image of Rama and Sita on his heart. Now proven as a true devotee.Devotees also call him ‘Sankat Mochan’ as people believe that all who pray to Lord Hanuman are able to overcome their toughest problems.
